Red or white, rosé or sparkling, the appellations of Languedoc are world renowned and do well to highlight the distinctiveness of the region. Gayda is an excellent local vineyard that offers wine courses as well as the not-to-be-missed chance to dine at its exquisite restaurant, either al-fresco in the shade of the gnarled and aged vines, or indoors amidst its chic surroundings. Nearby Limoux is famous for its sparkling white wine, and has been since before 1500. It has been suggested that Dom Perignan actually stole the idea for sparkling wine when he visited a local abbey in the area! If you are interested in learning more about Limoux and its wine making history and would like to sample the local tipple for yourself then include a visit to co-operative Aimery-Sieur d’Arques on your itinerary. Another excellent vineyard near Limoux is Domain Begude, which produces a spectacular Chardonnay. Don’t miss Limoux’s market whilst you are in the area. It runs on Fridays and sets out stalls bearing local food and crafts. Also surrounding this area are the famous wine regions of award winning Corbieres and Minervois which are brimming with wonderful vineyards and are well worth looking up before you set off, especially if you have a fondness for wine. |
